This is my channel where I shoot video of some of my favorite things. I enjoy working on and restoring all kinds of vintage machinery - from woodworking machines, metal working machines, old farm equipment, steam engines, and steam locomotives. I spend a lot of my spare time volunteering at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture where I help to restore and keep their machinery up and running.

Monarch 612 Lathe Restoration: Installing an Aloris DA Tool Post, Chuck, and Making First Cuts!
Hi Keith. Would you please explain your repeated use of the word Gypsy? Thanks
kool!!
Looking good, Keith. Wish I was closer.
Im surprised - NO REBAR! No REBAR IN SLAB..,
TARP YOUR MACHINERY ETC..ASAP..! Cover them and prevent that dust from demo...!
Why Imperial? Tally Ho will sail the world if they ever have to replace a bolt they had better be in North America! Thats why US ships are metric.
Hey keith, i have a question, how do you set gear trains for 107 teeth helical gear? I mean can you set up a differential indexing gear train to get proper division, plus grain train for the helix altogether?
13:40 - I dare anyone to gripe about the prep planning and work; double the rating of that crane! 14:54 - Good the wind direction took that grit away from the shop. 15:41 - You have other issues in mind; good job. 17:45 - And then the rain hit! Thank goodness it wasn't a thunder-bumper! Well, maybe. 19:44 - Standing O! This 78YO was not gonna pitch in, even if it was a 50 mile ride. 20:38 - Had a bag delivery one morning, say 50 years ago. 8AM. Driver pointed to the bags on the truck and said "I'm retiring this week". I had a hell of a workout before going to work that morning. 26:10 - Again, standing O!
What luck !!
Hello Keith, It seems your team left out an important step in mixing cement-mortar-thinset etc. You didn't allow the cement to slake. About Slaking After the thinset/cement has been mixed, stop the mixer to allow 15 minutes for the material to slake. Then re-mix. Slaking allows all the ingredients (polymers) in the mortar/cement to be properly mixed prior to being applied to the wall or floor area. After 15 minutes you can look into the mixer and see little bubbles forming. Then restart the mixer and after a few minutes pour it. You can walk on it or start the second phase the next day but it actually takes 21 days to fully cure. There is a simple test you can do to test the product in the mixer before using, just use a 17' trowel to scoop up some product, drop shake it once and turn the trowel over. If the product stays on the trowel for a second you're good, if it slides off right away, sprinkle more powder mix and try again. Thanks Keith, I enjoyed the Tally Ho videos.
I'm not the least bit surprised you had willing helpers. Those who give of themselves freely often have ready hands to help them when the time comes.
Great video but audio quality is poor
I know it's a teaching video but it is very lame. Speed is far to slow and cutting tool isn't great. Finish on the shaft of that diameter and pitch will be better with a slightly higher chuch speed.
Hello everybody, grateful for the support that Keith and the other involved in the project are getting. I find it educational and don’t have a machining background. I happen across this other historical documentary regarding the operation of capstans from the age of sail. I thought it might make a nice tangent to this project, and have folks understand the operation of a traditional capstan. You can adjust for scale. ruclips.net/video/z9t92GvDK_U/видео.htmlsi=V2oDECvaFcRW6FcI
should have dug out some soil to underpin this to the existing slab by about 12 inches. ready mix is WAY TO WET, you cant just caulk in epoxy after the rebar, must be done before and the rebar then installed and must be clean and the hole clean. IMO a bit of a S show for an otherwise great channel
The existing floor slab was far too thin to even take rebar and will likely crack. You're right the slab should've been undercut at least 12-18“ from the edges and filled with 8 to 10" of concrete to properly tie in the column and the slump looked to wet to me as well. It was obvious none of them had much experience with concrete. They didn't even have a float. I hope it turns out well anyway.
Great job a wonderful group of people to share the work and lend a hand. I was impressed with everyone involved standing in the rain not running for cover. Sharing the discomfort as well. 👍
I'm a big fan of the voice-over approach. The results are much more comprehensible and enjoyable. I imagine the work is greater though.
;D Sorry, not how I would have done it. I would have had one person in charge of measuring the water in a bucket, not directly from the hose. Of course, your hose might be metered like I've seen in some bakery production for bread dough. ;D
I think that bolt pattern is backwards....<grin>.
The camera work made it seem like we were there.
Many K&T machines came out of the government storage depot (salt caverns) in Hutchinson, KS and many machines were new when placed there. A company that I worked for in the 60s bought 3 new short bed casing lathes and at that time there 100s of machines including K&T rotary head milling machines.
7:12 What's the point of holding the straps? Besides risking to lose a few fingers that is... seems like an unneeded risk here?
Interesting. I would have enjoyed seeing how you moved the machine tools. Maybe you could video it, with a single camera in the corner or something, when you put them all back. Nice video & excellent resources available -- people & equipment.
Is there reo in the actual floor slab?
Fantastic get together
Had me worried at the start there, Keith, thought you were using a cane. Good intro.
Good rule of thumb, it can't be stuck if its liquid. Keith, great content as always!
You can always sand the concrete down which won't take you long, an hour at most. Mind you, depending on which type of machine you use will determine how dusty it gets.
Great tractor Keith
Happy to see you had plenty of help and thank you to all of the gentlemen who came out and helped you.
Great to see the community coming together to get this done Keith!
LOVE the Archer shirt! He rules!!
Jesus you e dropped a hell of a lot of weight, fuggin well done mate
Looks like Colin Furze’s dirt.
Heck, I almost drove down there from Montana to help out. Lordy, that’s a long ways!
Are the bolts attached to the rebar cage in any way, or do they just run straight down into the concrete?
It is great seeing a well laid plan come to fruition. Great!
The best thing about volunteer help is watching guys that know what they are doing and seeing them work their tails off. I heard you say mix 3.7 yards of concrete by hand and nearly fell out of my chair. I then saw that bobcat front loader mixer and said - brilliant tool to get the job done. Hats off to all the crew that took time out of their lives to help Keith dig, form, and pour the foundation for the jib crane. God bless you all and well done lads. A great video Keith considering how busy you were and most of all.... Thanks for sharing!
Really appreciated your narration for each step along the way. I am not a machinist but could tell this would be a 'simple' and repetitive project. Your camera placement, sound levels of voice and machine, and editing were most assuredly not mundane. Great job Keith, thank you.
WoW that's Amazing Glad you had lots of help 😊😊😊
Great Job! Keep the concrete wet for 13 Days!
That won't be do much considering the cube is four feet thick. It will take that wet ready mix months to cure nevermind the recommended 28 days. That was not the cement to use.
Those are some great friends.
Wouldn’t cast iron and bronze in contact cause galvanic corrosion?
🇷🇺💪👍👍👍
Thanks, Keith. Fun to watch.
Nice u had the help and concrete reaches 1/2 strength in 28 days
Great to see the mix on the team from the young studs to the war horses and the super experienced! Looks like everyone was working steady and always helping out. Fantastic.. Now I will have to start shopping for a crane!
My Gods. Real Men working. Here in Los Angeles they would have started calling their lawyers and OSHA for making them get wet in the rain.
BRAVO !! LOOKS GREAT !!
Super job Keith and team - well done indeed!
